about

Song bio: Mystic knew it was time. Against the backdrop of a ceaseless wave of unchecked, wanton police brutality against people of color and a president who seems intent on sparking a race war, the socially-aware, Grammy-nominated rapper-singer has returned. Her evocative new single, “We Are The People (All Around The World),” is a call to action on one hand and a message of hope in the other.

“In the context of rising global racism, white supremacy and violent nationalism, as people beautifully resist and we go through these challenging times, we’ve got to make sure that we're also bringing something to the table that is connected to the joy and the hope that our children hold,” Mystic says. “I want to be able to continue to hold onto it as an educator and somebody who works with children. I want to give people something to listen to and to sing to and to chant and to feel good about, even while addressing really serious issues.”

As Mystic rap-sings about the murder of her mentee, children held in cages, and a president she feels is out of control, she presents a clear desire for a better tomorrow for all people, and for children in particular. “We want justice,” she sings. “We want our children to thrive.”

“It's not just about a chorus or song lyrics,” Mystic reveals. “This is a prayer from the deepest part of myself and that’s what’s necessary. Isn’t that what we’re fighting for right now: for the police to stop killing us, to have equal educational opportunities, and to be able to be Black, Brown, and Indigenous – and not just survive, but to thrive. I think that is the urgency of now.”

After establishing herself as one of rap’s best dual threat rapper-singers with to her 2001 album, Cuts For Luck And Scars For Freedom, Mystic earned a Grammy-nomination for her single “W.” Her most recent LP, 2014’s Beautiful Resistance, cemented her status as one of rap’s most insightful artists. Beyond her recording career, Mystic earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Oxford and works with kindergarten and first grade students in an afterschool program in Oakland, California.

Produced by Walt Liquor, “We Are The People (All Around The World)” is the lead single from Mystic’s forthcoming project, which she plans to release in 2021. In the interim, she hopes that “We Are The People (All Around The World)” can serve as the soundtrack for social justice and amplify the call for broad-based societal reform.

“It's just a deeply critical time,” she says. “The president is a threat to my life. His administration and its policies are a threat to my life, as well the lives of all Black people, Brown people, poor people, and women.”

lyrics

Verse 1
I’ve been thinking to myself
About the grace of being grown
Watching children in the streets
Spanning continents and time zones
Been off teaching babies
Seek the knowledge, do the work
They killed my mentee in the streets (I love you Brandon Harrison)
It still hurts
Mother Moon whispers
If we really stop and listen
Practice breathing as a prayer
My cheeks, they glisten
For babies in cages
And families crossing borders
If you support this president
Then you are out of order
See, you picked a side
You can’t stand on mine
You are a risk to my existence
We’re not the same kind
You, would never die for the people
I’m a woman of the people
We will never be equal

Chorus
We, we are the people
Fighting for justice every day
We, as long as we’re breathing
We won’t be leaving, never no way
And let the children say,
We want, we want justice!
We want, we want our children to thrive!
We want, we want justice!
We want, we want our children to thrive!

Verse 2
Rise and Resist
You can feel it in my kiss
I tell the babies that they’re magic
‘Cuz it’s difficult to live
I mean, politicians lie
Education’s warfare
The planet is on fire
And, I care
Bodies are still dropping
From the bullets of oppressors
Police are still corrupt
Causing worldwide depression
But isolation’s dangerous
For no child’s less important
Fuck white supremacists!
I’m yelling out, “Deport them”!

Chorus
We, we are the people
Fighting for justice everyday
We, as long as we’re breathing
We won’t be leaving, never no way
And let the children say,
We want, we want justice!
We want, we want our children to thrive!
We want, we want justice!
We want, we want our children to thrive!

Bridge
All around the world
All around the world
All around the world
We the people, we the people, we the people
All around the world
We the people, we the people, we the people
All around the world
We the people, we the people, we the people
All around the world
We the people, we the people, we the people

Chorus
We want, we want justice!
We want, we want our children to thrive!
We want, we want justice!
We want, we want our children to thrive!
